Hot Wheels unveils new Star Wars-themed lineup

With a new Star Wars movie due out in 2015, the franchise has joined forces with Hot Wheels to create a set of limited-edition model cars as well as a life-sized, one-off, fully drivable Darth Vader car.

The Darth Vader car, fashioned in the likeness of the universe’s favourite Sith Lord, will be unveiled at the Comic-Con in San Diego on Wednesday. The fully operational dragster is powered by an LS3 V8 engine that pushes 526 horsepower through the rear wheels and was built to help promote the new line of Hot Wheels/Star Wars toys and play sets that will be available later this year and at the Comic-Con. The car’s grille, which looks like the mouthpiece on Darth Vader’s helmet, is made of carbon fiber. Some sources say the car will even mimic Darth Vader’s trademark heavy breathing sounds. The car is built on a C5 Corvette chassis and its top speed is said to be 129 km/h.

The Comic-Con will be the public’s first chance to see the whole Star Wars lineup. The first set of Hot Wheels die-casts are modelled after Luke Skywalker, Yoda, R2-D2 and Chewbacca. Interestingly, the Yoda car looks like a Smart fortwo, R2-D2 is a hot rod, and Chewbacca looks like a Unimog and he’s carrying the Millennium Falcon on his flatbed. Check out Car and Driver to see all the photos of the new Hot Wheels lineup.
