Lexus mulling over sub-NX crossover

Hot on the heels of the all-new 2015 NX, Lexus is considering adding another compact crossover to its lineup.

Billed as a competitor to the likes of the Audi Q1, the Buick Encore and the Mini Countryman, the new crossover would slot below the new NX, according to a report from Autocar UK.

Speaking to Autocar, Alain Uyttenhoven, Lexus Europe’s vice president, said the launch of a sub-NX crossover was not only in the pipeline, but also made sense. He didn’t confirm the baby crossover, but Uyttenhoven explained buyers in markets such as China, Europe and Japan are interested in smaller luxury vehicles, a market Lexus is pursuing. Put simply, Lexus’ larger SUVs, such as the RX and GX, just won’t cut it.

On another note, Uyttenhoven said we could also see fuel-cell technology in larger cars, such as the range-topping Lexus LS, once they can be tuned and developed for performance driving.
