Is Subaru planning a successor to the SVX?

Subaru’s funky, split-window SVX coupe from the 1990s could be making a comeback within the next few years.

That’s the latest word from Australia’s Motoring, after reportedly speaking to an unnamed source at Subaru, who says the SVX is “making a comeback, and with a six-cylinder boxer hybrid setup.

Motoring also claims it was shown a preliminary sketch of the SVX, revealing a low-slung look inspired by the Viziv 2 concept, which made its debut at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this year. The new model will supposedly be underpinned by Subaru’s upcoming modular platform architecture, and will likely utilize hybrid technology derived from Lexus.

While there is no official word yet from Subaru, the report suggests the Japanese automaker already decided to build the SVX at its Indiana plant and will launch as early as 2017.
