Because It Needed More: Mercedes-Benz SL63 Gets Power Boost for 2015
We recently reported that Mercedes is adding the twin-turbo six-cylinder SL400 at the bottom of the convertible’s lineup, and now news comes in regarding the SL63 AMG at the other end of the spectrum.

According to a report from Jalopnik and confirmed to us by Mercedes, the SL63 AMG will pack 47 more horsepower for the 2015 model year, bringing the total count to 577. Maximum torque will be rated at 644 lb-ft, which is an increase of 54. The engine upgrade will bring the SL in line with the latest S63 AMG sedan, which debuted with the more powerful engine. It’s unclear at this point if the SL63 will continue to be offered with a Performance package; an example that finished second in a four-car comparo was thus equipped, and had 557 horsepower and 664 lb-ft.

The extra muscle should boost the credentials of what an AMG executive has described to us as a severely underrated driver’s car. Far lighter than its predecessor and tuned for quick responses, the SL63 AMG encroaches on SLS levels of performance. And while the SL65 AMG is even more powerful with 621 ponies and 738 lb-ft, its heavy 6.0-liter V-12 hanging out up front causes the car to lose some precision and agility in corners.
