This commercial will scare you into not texting and driving

Chances are, you’ve come across a distracted driver. You know, the types who feel inclined to adjust their makeup, fiddle with cellphones or eat a meal behind the wheel. You could even be one of them, but you just don’t want to admit it.

Either way, the U.S. National Highway Traffic and Safety Adminsitration (NHTSA) recently made a commercial meant to be a wake-up call for distracted drivers. It starts off with three young adults driving along in an older Dodge Neon. Moments later, the driver pulls out her cellphone, taking her eyes off the road. Needless to say, in the split-second that her attention was diverted to the cellphone, a lot happens. A lot that could have been avoided.

The commercial is part of the NHTSA’s National Distracted Driving Awareness Month campaign in the U.S., where it and local law enforcement will be cracking down on distracted motorists. It’s effective, to say the least — I could use this space to wax lyrical with stats on distracted driving and explain why you shouldn’t do it, but you could just watch the commercial instead. It’ll scare you into paying attention behind the wheel.
