Hit the outback trails in luxury

Crossovers make up a large piece of the auto sales pie in Canada. And with the segment expanding each year, the competition is heating up. Here are a few CUVs to check out at the show.

2014 BMW X1

BMW’s Sports Activity Vehicle (SAV), the X1, only came to our shores a couple of years ago, but it is making a big splash. Created for the urban environment but capable of going off the beaten path, this German crossover offers a comfortable ride with some nice creature comforts. Two trims are available: the xDrive28i and the xDrive35i. The 28i has a 2.0L, TwinTurbo Power inline four cylinder producing 241 horsepower and 258 lb-ft of torque. The 35i has 300 horses and 300 lb-ft of torque underneath the hood. The 28i is then paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission; the 35i is linked to a six-speed automatic. Either way, the result is an X1 that is efficient as well as peppy.

2015 Lincoln MKC

Lincoln Motor Co. is adding another all-new product to its lineup for 2015 — the MKC. The small premium utility vehicle is the second all-new Lincoln of four as the brand undergoes a significant overhaul. The MKC is built new from the ground up, and brings its customers what the company calls an assortment of first-in-class features. The American automaker is hoping to appeal to a younger, more diverse customer with its introduction. The exterior features the signature split-wing grille and a uniquely crafted, hands-free wraparound liftgate. It has a high beltline and low shoulders with an available Panoramic Vista glass roof. Inside, there is Lincoln’s unique instrument panel, which showcases the firm’s signature push-button gear shifter. Under the hood, the MKC comes standard with a 2.0-litre EcoBoost four-cylinder turbocharged engine, projected to produce 240 horsepower at 5,500 rpm and 270 lb-ft of torque at 3,000 rpm. That’s according to preliminary test data. The MKC also brings to life an all-new 2.3-litre EcoBoost turbocharged four producing 275 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. The premium utility vehicle comes standard with Intelligent All-Wheel Drive and 18-inch wheels.
