Midget Mazda 2-based SUV? Maybe . . .
Rumors from Japan have Mazda creating a small SUV based on the upcoming redesign of the Mazda 2. Automotive News, citing Japan’s Nikkei business daily, estimates the little SUV (possibly named the CX-2) will debut later in 2014, following this summer’s intro of the new Mazda 2.

It is suggested Mazda’s small SUV would begin as a Japan-only model, sales later spreading to Europe and emerging markets. Mazda USA won’t speculate on its future products, but that doesn’t mean we can’t.

We know Honda is prepping the small Fit-based Vezel SUV for the U.S., and a similar-sized Mazda could, so to speak, fit right in that new market segment. The Honda sub CR-V will be built in Mexico alongside the Fit and the new Mazda 2 will also be assembled south of the border with its co-developed platform-mate, the next-gen Toyota Yaris. So slotting in a like-architecture CX-2 could make sense. We’ve already suggested the reworked Mazda 2 will inherit the Kodo design theme used on the successful Mazda 3, so would a potential CX-2 reflect the shape of the CX-5?
