Will we see a McLaren hot hatchback?

Currently, McLaren’s plans for its road car lineup include a hypercar, a supercar and a sportscar. We’ve seen the MP4-12C fill the supercar niche while the P1 sits atop the lineup as the hypercar, and a sportscar known as the P13 is in the pipeline.

There could be another model on the way, according to Road and Track and Dutch website Autovisie. In an interview, McLaren’s chief designer Frank Stephenson told Autovisie a car like the Volkswagen Golf GTI, but with a carbon fibre monocoque chassis and priced between $40,000 and $50,000, is something that will happen in the future.

Stephenson himself not only played a key role in designing the 12C and the P1, but also penned the Mini Cooper, the Fiat 500 and the Alfa Romeo MiTo. It’s anyone’s guess as to when this will happen, but before it does, McLaren has to complete the upcoming P13. Rumored to be a Porsche 911 fighter, McLaren will shoehorn its 3.8-litre V8 under the hood and detune it to about 400 horsepower.

Still, a hatchback is entirely feasible given not only Stephenson’s expertise in designing hatchbacks, but with carbon fibre chassis components trickling into cars like the BMW i3.
