Hatchback: 2014 Subaru XV Crosstrek

Small-footprint crossover with rugged styling and good ground clearance; excellent fuel economy

The Impreza might have all-wheel-drive, but start tacking some really bumpy roads and you’ll find the ride height to maybe not up to the task – nothing’s more painful than the horrible crunch of bottoming out over a rocky outcrop or super-deep pothole. For those who will spend more time off the beaten path, but don’t want a big, thirsty SUV, the Crosstrek gives the best of both world’s: nimble size and good fuel consumption of the Impreza, the ride height of something like a Forester. It’s not any bigger inside than a Impreza Hatchback, despite the jacked-up looks, but it is much more capable when the going gets rough.
