Extreme sports star Travis Pastrana is throwing in the towel on his NASCAR career, announcing that he’ll not be taking part in the 2014 Nationwide Series. Pastrana, 30, ran his first NASCAR event in 2011, the Toyota All-Star Showdown, and made his Nationwide Series debut in April 2012.

“It’s tough to step back now and prove the critics were right, but unfortunately my results were not good enough to get the sponsors I needed to appropriately fund next season,” Pastrana said in a statement on his Facebook page.

Pastrana also cited the difficult NASCAR schedule, saying, “The NASCAR schedule is grueling and takes enormous sacrifices from those you love to make work. With a lack of funding next year, now is my opportunity to sit back and offer support as [his wife] chases her goals.

Pastrana, who dabbled in rallying before joining the stock car circuit, will finish out his season at this weekend’s Ford EcoBoost 300 at Homestead-Miami Speedway.
