Coupe: Mercedes-Benz SLS AMG

New GT and Black series models boast highest-ever performance and power; raw V8 performance married to high-tech control

If the gull-winged SLS is Mercedes-Benz’s flagship, then this is the flagship of the SLS range: the blistering-fast, hugely-flared, SLS Black Series. Already a handful with huge V8 power and rear-wheel-drive, the SLS gets even hairier with a bump in horsepower to 622 from its hand-built 6.2-litre V8, wider fenders front and rear, a titanium exhaust system and staggered 19- and 20-inch steamroller-wide alloys. There’s also a plethora of carbon-fibre accents, from a functional rear diffuser and rear spoiler, to huge cooling intakes up front and a weight-reducing carbon-fibre hood. A performance coil-over system keeps the SLS unflappable in the corners, and an electrically-controlled rear differential helps put the power down.
