Sedan: 2014 Audi A3

No longer merely a fancy version of the Golf, Audi’s entry-level car now comes as a stylish sedan.

Audi fans often speak wistfully of the compact size and nimbleness of the original A4 sedan. Now all grown up, the A4 is as big as the old A6, the A6 is as big as the old A8 — with increasing size and price tag, there’s suddenly a little space at the bottom. The car that slots in at the bottom of the Audi sedan range is exactly as you’d expect: an A4 in miniature. The punchy 2.0L turbocharged engine should delight, and so too will the smaller 1.8L turbo. Efficiency-minded folks will be pleased to learn that a diesel option is still on the table in front-wheel-drive models, now putting out a stellar 150 hp and 238 lb.-ft. of torque. Excitingly, there’ll also be a high-powered S model to follow.
