Skoda Rapid Spaceback 1.2 TSI GreenTech first drive

Stretched Rapid estate offers budget no-frills motoring, but the experience is adequate rather than exemplary

The Skoda Rapid Spaceback, a stretched version of the standard Rapid, in final production form. It’s difficult to place exactly which market segment the Spaceback is destined for, but to take on the estate market it’ll need to compete with the likes of the Hyundai i30 Tourer, Kia Cee’d Sportswagon and also the class king, the Volkswagen Golf Estate. In terms of dimensions the Rapid Spaceback is smaller than those potential rivals. It also offers less storage space with its seats up, at 415 litres. The i30 Tourer and Cee’d Sportswagon both have a capacity of 528 litres, and the Golf Estate manages 605 litres. With the seats down, the Rapid Spaceback’s load bay expands to 1380 litres.
