Congratulations, New Jersey – you now have a Grand Prix! Formula One has just published the calendar for the 2014 world championship, and the Garden State is one of four additions, along with Austria, Russia and Mexico, to the schedule. New Jersey is one of several venues listed as “provisional,” meaning it is still subject to circuit approval. Regardless, this is a major step forward considering the NJ race was originally scheduled for 2013 but was first pushed back because the track wasn’t ready in time, and then canceled altogether due to funding issues.
Now resurrected, the New Jersey Grand Prix of America will take place June 1, 2014 “on a temporary street circuit along the Hudson River in Weehawken and West New York, with the New York City skyline as its backdrop,” according to F1. Its addition gives America two grands prix, with the other being the United States Grand Prix at the Circuit of the Americas in Austin, Texas (scheduled for November 9, 2014).
