Can the company that builds the speedster shown above really branch out into the world of recreational vehicles? Dallara, the chassis builder of choice for the IndyCar Series, is going to build an RV. It won’t just be your run of the mill house on wheels, though. It’s going to be something much, much more than that.
Hired on by Global Caravan Technologies for its expertise in carbon-fiber technologies, Dallara will help build an environmentally friendly, super-luxury RV that uses a race-derived, carbon-fiber monocoque chassis. Called the CR-1 Carbon, it’ll be unveiled in December at the Performance Racing Industry show in Indianapolis, and will eventually morph into a range of fifth-wheels and travel trailers ranging from $160,000 to $500,000. According to GCT, the use of carbon fiber will improve fuel economy by up to 100 percent.
This isn’t such a dramatic leap for Dallara, as it’s consultancy business isn’t some small thing. Dallara USA’s CEO Stefano DePonti said, “For Dallara, helping GCT to design RVs applies our strengths in composites, testing and vehicle dynamics, learned from decades of experience in racing car competition. It is fitting that Dallara is lending our advice and expertise to such a transformative project.”
The unveiling of the CR-1 is also going to be broadcast live online. Take a look down below for the joint press release from Dallara and GCT.
