Road Test: 2013 Ram 1500 Outdoorsman Crew Cab 4×4

VANCOUVER – The last half-decade has seen miles of change in the full-sized truck segment.

Much in the way that entry-level compact car buyers have become more demanding, the folks buying what used to be considered “work trucks” have also been calling for more creature comforts than ever and manufacturers are more than happy to oblige. Touch screen infotainment and broad swathes of leather have become commonplace, and all of a sudden trucks are no longer the low-tech end of any automaker’s lineup.

After some good bonding with Ford-s F150 in recent years I figured it was only right that I start picking away at a few other offerings to see how level the playing field really is.

On the outside the Ram 1500 is big and beefy, and unlike many trucks lately, it isn’t slathered in faux chrome.

Justin Mastine-Frost,

On the outside the Ram 1500 is by far my favourite truck on the road. It’s big, it’s beefy, and unlike many trucks lately, it isn’t slathered in faux chrome.

When GMC started pushing advertising saying “We raised the bar, and then we chromed it” I actually threw up a little, so the Ram 1500 is definitely a bit more my speed.

The interior cabin is equally understated with a ton of storage scattered throughout the cabin.

Justin Mastine-Frost,

The interior cabin is equally understated. There is a ton of storage scattered throughout the interior of the Ram, so much so that you could likely bury a six-pack in the centre console storage and still have room to pile your lunch on it. I must say the Ram/Dodge/Jeep infotainment is still overdue for a refresh, but it is a pretty simple system to get used to and shouldn’t be a dealbreaker for shoppers.

Hauling around the city, the Ram’s 3.6L V6 has just enough get-up’n-go to keep it from feeling sluggish. With both a diesel and HEMI V8 engine available this is not likely to be the engine of choice for those planning on serious hauling, but nonetheless it’s not a bad option. The V6 may have struggled more if it weren’t equipped with this new slick 8-speed automatic gearbox. While it may seem like overkill to some, the 8-speed operates seamlessly and does wonders for the truck’s fuel economy specs.

Rather than relying on the passenger cabin for safe and lockable storage, the 1500 has been designed with sealed and locked storage boxes on both sides of the truck bed.

Justin Mastine-Frost,

The Ram also has plenty of goodies on board for urbanites wanting to put this truck to work. Rather than relying on the passenger cabin for safe and lockable storage, the 1500 has been designed with sealed and locked storage boxes on both sides of the truck bed which use up that awkward space ahead and behind the rear wheel wells. Of all the ingenious uses of space the industry has doled out lately, this is the smartest by far.

So with a name like “Outdoorsman” I couldn’t help but haul the big 4
